More than 2,500 soldiers have been detained by Turkish authorities following the failed coup attempt.

Tanks and fighter jets were seen on the streets of the capital Ankara and Istanbul as the military tried to take over the country.

Major bridges and installations in the two major cities were held by soldiers.

Shootings and explosions were also reported in the resort of Marmaris, which is popular with Britons.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s whereabouts were initially unknown as the coup attempt took place.

But he was interviewed on a TV channel using FaceTime to urge his supporters to take to the streets and regain control of the country.

Violent clashes were then seen leading to the deaths of 181 people with over about 1,154 people injured.

This morning President Erdogan claimed he had regained control of the country.

More than 2,800 military personnel have since been arrested.

The Turkish Embassy said in a statement: “The situation unfolded in Turkey was a coup attempt to overthrow the democratically-elected government.

“This attempt was foiled by the Turkish people in unity and solidarity. Our president and government are in charge.

“Turkish armed forces was not involved in the coup attempt in its entirety. It was conducted by a clique within the armed forces and received a well-deserved response from our nation.”

Earlier, military figures announced they had “fully seized control” of the country – a member of Nato and an applicant for EU membership – in a bid to restore democracy and the rule of law.
